Asian Pacific Islander Cancer Education Materials (APICEM) Web Portal

Abstract Text:
Objective: To provide easy access to cancer education materials in Asian and Pacific Islander languages for non-English or limited English proficient cancer patients and families as well as health care providers through an online web portal. Methods: APICEM is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and AANCART: The National Center for Reducing Asian American Cancer Health Disparities. The American Cancer Society assumes responsibility for the technical development and maintenance of the web portal while AANCART is primarily responsible for identifying and developing relationships with organizations and agencies that have developed API cancer education materials. The Governance Committee oversees the content and operations of APICEM and has representation from ACS, AANCART, `Imi Hale, and WINCART. Results: There are presently 362 documents in 22 Asian and Pacific Islander languages covering 29 cancer types and on 24 topics in APICEM contributed by twelve organizations. Since its launch in March 2006 there has been more than 30,000 “hits” to this web portal. APICEM is the first “Google-d” item using the term, “cancer education materials in Asian and Pacific Islander languages”. Implications: Prior to the creation of APICEM no publicly accessible user-friendly web-based retrieval system existed for cancer education materials in API languages. APICEM is now the premier national resource for lay cancer education materials in Asian and Pacific Islander languages. Next Steps: AANCART is working on developing a YouTube channel to host cancer educational videos that can be linked to the APICEM web portal.
