5701 Marinelli Road
Bethesda, MD 20852
Sponsor:
Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), National Cancer Institute
Goal:
Enhance mutually beneficial interactions among CRCHD programs by sharing scientific knowledge, encouraging junior investigators, and broadening community participation.
Objectives:
- To highlight scientific achievements across CRCHD research and training programs.
- To enhance networking opportunities among colleagues and senior investigators representing cancer and cancer health disparities programs.
- To familiarize junior investigators with critical components of a successful research proposal and the application review process through participation in a mock review session.
- To empower community partners to educate scientists and others about culturally-appropriate strategies needed to sustain and increase community involvement in research.
Who Should Attend:
Summit 08 is open to a wide range of audience members from across cancer-related health disparities research and diversity training programs, including principal investigators, junior investigators, program staff, health care professionals, community partners, project staff, civic leaders, advocates and federal staff.
Abstract Submission Guidelines:
The abstract must be submitted online at www.cancermeetings.org/CHDSummit08/abstractLogin.cfm using minimal text formatting (i.e., tables, etc.). Abstracts solicited should highlight novel scientific, clinical, and training efforts; applications in the community; and policy implications of various approaches across the cancer control continuum among diverse populations. The following information must be included on all submitted abstracts:
- Title of abstract
- Author name(s), affiliation(s)
- List primary presenter, affiliation, address, phone number and e-mail
- Indicate preferred format: poster, oral, roundtable, or abstract book only
- Indicate target population and cancer site
- Abstract length: 250 words maximum
- Include background, objectives, methods, results, implications, and next steps
- Each CRCHD sponsored program and junior investigator must submit at least one abstract.
- A junior investigator is an individual supported by a CRCHD-sponsored program who is not a PI on a MICCP, CNP, or PNRP, or R01 grant such as individuals who hold a diversity supplement, F31, K Award, or serve as a co-leader on a pilot within the MICCP, CNP, or PNRP programs.
- Non-supported junior investigators who do not wish to submit for the poster or oral presentation, may choose to submit an abstract highlighting their current project for the abstract book only.
- Posters are only accepted from junior investigators who wish to participate in the poster competition.
- Community partners and patient navigators are encouraged to only submit abstracts for roundtable discussions.

Poster Competition
We have tentatively scheduled two junior investigator poster competitions to take place Monday, July 14, and Tuesday, July 15, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. It is the expectation that junior investigators across the NCI-funded CRCHD research and training programs will present scientific projects and results at this competition.
Posters will be displayed on 4’ x 6’ poster board and compete with posters in the appropriate research category. The categories are basic research; clinical research; and community-based research. A poster board and push pins will be provided.
Posters will be judged on the basis of scientific content; clarity of the presentation of the material on the poster; the individual presentation and response to questions from judges; innovation; and thoroughness.
Junior investigators who wish to participate in the competition should select “poster” as the presentation type in the abstract submission form, which can be found on the Summit website at www.cancermeetings.org/CHDSummit08/abstractLogin.cfm. They should also indicate a research category (see above) in which the poster should be judged. Prizes will be awarded to 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place winners within each category.
More information concerning the poster competition is detailed on the Summit ‘08 Web site (http://www.cancermeetings.org/CHDSummit08).
Roundtable Discussions
Abstracts are accepted from community partners and patient navigators to share lessons learned, best practices, accomplishments, challenges, and recommendations related to their participation in research programs.
Abstract Selection Criteria
Abstracts may be submitted for oral, round table or poster presentations and will be selected by a peer review process. Selection criteria will be based on relevance to the Summit theme, quality, innovation, robustness of study design and methodology (if applicable), and contribution to the science of cancer and cancer health disparities. Submissions on common or similar topics will be grouped together for presentation by format (oral, poster or round table).
Additional Information
If your abstract is selected for oral or roundtable formats, you will receive a notice including presentation guidelines and speaker ready room information. If your abstract has been selected for the poster competition, you will receive information concerning shipping instructions and address, and setup and breakdown hours.
